ENGLISH VERSION: Climate change has been a hot topic, but a recent survey by Illuminate Asia has uncovered that despite the majority of Indonesians being concerned about the impacts of climate change, there is excessive optimism that these impacts can still be mitigated.
Jakarta, 12 September, 2023 - Illuminate Asia, a leading market research company in Indonesia, has recently released the findings of a survey regarding the perceptions of the Indonesian public towards climate change as part of a global survey conducted across 26 countries by the Independent Research Institute Network (IRIS). This survey has revealed intriguing findings, where despite 93% of Indonesians expressing concerns about the impacts of climate change, 82% believe that these impacts can still be addressed.
In reality, at the Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in 2022, the United Nations declared that many of the impacts of climate change are no longer reversible. Observing this, Haris Rahmanto, Country Head of Illuminate Asia, pointed out that this phenomenon is a psychological bias known as optimism bias. He stated, "Optimism bias is a psychological term for the tendency to overestimate the likelihood of positive outcomes and underestimate the likelihood of negative ones."
Furthermore, Haris emphasized that due to the excessive optimism that climate change can still be addressed, people are inclined to neglect preventive measures and believe that the consequences of climate change won't directly affect them, leading them to take no action. In the case of climate change, the impact of optimism bias can be fatal.
Public Understanding of Net Zero Emissions and Renewable Energy
One of the strategies formulated to mitigate the impacts of climate change is the effort to achieve a Net Zero Emissions Economy. In this survey, 21% of the population is sceptical that Indonesia will achieve a net zero emissions economy, a significant increase compared to a similar study in 2021 that revealed only 6% of the population was sceptical about Indonesia reaching net zero emissions. Nevertheless, this level of pessimism is still better than the global average of 38%.
Renewable energy is also another crucial topic, with 58% of Indonesians considering renewable energy to be a top priority for addressing climate change. In terms of the importance of prioritizing renewable energy, Indonesia ranks eighth out of 27 surveyed countries, following Panama, Mexico, Brazil, Romania, Colombia, Italy, and India.
In conclusion, Haris stressed the importance of efforts to mitigate optimism bias and open the public's eyes to the fact that the impacts of climate change are already looming and difficult to prevent. Therefore, urgency in helping to slow down these climate change impacts should be a top priority.
About the Climate Change Perception Study
In 2021, along with 12 other market research companies within the IRIS network, Illuminate Asia conducted a multi-country survey aimed at increasing awareness of the need for climate education and literacy programs to accelerate the development of low-carbon and green economies. All fieldwork was conducted online between September 10 and October 20, 2021.
In 2023, Illuminate Asia and 26 IRIS member companies across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and North America conducted a tracking study focused on economic confidence, climate change, and healthcare systems. All fieldwork was conducted online between February and June 2023. In total, over 18,000 individuals were surveyed. In Indonesia, the research was conducted in collaboration with TSurvey, with a total of 500 respondents from across the archipelago.

Survei ini mengungkap temuan menarik di mana meskipun 93% masyarakat Indonesia khawatir terhadap dampak perubahan iklim, 82% merasa bahwa dampak perubahan iklim masih bisa diatasi.
Kenyataannya, PBB di Konferensi Perubahan Iklim di Glasgow pada tahun 2022 menyatakan bahwa banyak dampak dari perubahan iklim yang tidak lagi bisa diperbaiki. Melihat hal ini, Haris Rahmanto, Country Head Illuminate Asia, menyebutkan bahwa hal ini merupakan sebuah fenomena psikologis yang disebut sebagai bias optimisme. “Bias optimisme adalah istilah psikologi terhadap kecenderungan untuk melebih-lebihkan kemungkinan terjadinya hasil positif dan meremehkan kemungkinan terjadinya hal-hal negatif”, katanya.
Lebih lanjut lagi, Haris menyatakan bahwa karena masyarakat sangat optimis bahwa perubahan iklim masih bisa diatasi, maka mereka cenderung mengabaikan tindakan preventif dan merasa bahwa konsekuensi dari perubahan iklim tidak akan mempengaruhi mereka secara langsung sehingga mereka tidak mengambil tindakan apapun. Di kasus perubahan iklim, dampak dari bias optimisme bisa fatal.
Pemahaman terhadap Emisi Nol Bersih (Net Zero Emissions) dan Energi Terbarukan
Salah satu strategi yang dirumuskan untuk mengurangi dampak perubahan iklim adalah usaha untuk mencapai Ekonomi Nol Emisi Bersih (Net Zero Emissions Economy). Di survei ini, 21% masyarakat skeptis bahwa Indonesia akan mencapai ekonomi nol emisi bersih, sebuah peningkatan yang tajam dibandingkan dengan studi serupa di tahun 2021 yang mengungkapan bahwa hanya 6% masyarakat yang skeptis bahwa Indonesia akan mencapai emisi nol bersih. Meskipun demikian, tingkat pesimisme ini masih lebih baik dibandingkan rata-rata global sebesar 38%.
Energi terbarukan juga menjadi topik penting lainnya, dimana 58% masyarakat Indonesia menganggap energi terbarukan harus dijadikan prioritas penanganan utama. Dalam hal pentingnya prioritas terhadap energi terbarukan, Indonesia menduduki peringkat kedelapan dari 27 negara yang disurvei setelah Panama, Mexico, Brazil, Romania, Kolombia, Italia dan India.
Sebagai penutup, Haris menekankan pentingnya usaha untuk menekan bias optimisme dan membuka mata masyarakat bahwa dampak perubahan iklim sudah di depan mata dan sulit dicegah, sehingga masyarakat harus mengedepankan urgensi dalam membantu memperlambat dampak perubahan iklim ini.
Tentang Studi Persepsi Perubahan Iklim
Pada tahun 2021, bersama dengan 12 perusahaan riset pasar lainnya dalam jaringan IRIS, Illuminate Asia melakukan survei multi-negara yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran akan perlunya program pendidikan dan literasi iklim guna mempercepat realisasi pembangunan rendah karbon dan ekonomi hijau. Semua kerja lapangan dilakukan secara online antara 10 September – 20 Oktober 2021.
Pada tahun 2023, Illuminate Asia dan 26 perusahaan anggota IRIS di seluruh Asia, Eropa, Amerika, dan Amerika Utara melakukan studi pelacakan yang berfokus pada topik kepercayaan ekonomi, perubahan iklim, dan sistem kesehatan. Semua kerja lapangan dilakukan secara daring antara Februari – Juni 2023. Secara total, lebih dari 18.000 orang disurvei. Di Indonesia, penelitian dilakukan bekerja sama dengan TSurvey dengan total 500 responden di seluruh nusantara.
